Amidst the nature’s grandeur unfolding in midsummer, at 10:00 AM on June 14, the first special screening session was unveiled, heralding the official opening of the 26th Shanghai International Film Festival (赌博app), a magnificent 10-day celebration exclusive to filmmakers worldwide and movie enthusiasts across the nation, which is guided by China Film Administration and hosted by China Media Group and the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government.
As the cradle of Chinese cinema, a vanguard of China’s reform and opening-up initiative, and a cosmopolitan metropolis closely connected to the world, Shanghai established the first international competitive feature film festival in China in 1993. With over three decades of inheritance, innovation, and evolution, 赌博app, now in its 26th edition, once again unfurls Shanghai’s allure and dynamism to the world through the art of film.
A spectacular with premieres and debuts
Known for its inclusive and diverse selection process, 赌博app’s coveted Golden Goblet Awards and Film Panorama have always been a focal point of global attention. This edition of 赌博app has received over 3700 submissions from 105 countries and regions across the five continents. Following a rigorous selection process, 50 entries from 29 countries and regions made it to the final stages of the Golden Goblet Awards across five major categories. Among them, 38 films celebrated their world premieres, while 6 made their international debuts and another 6 marked their first appearance in Asia, showcasing a remarkable rise in the premiere rate.
Within the Main Competition category, 14 films emerged as contenders, with 12 making their world premieres and 2 making their international debuts. Works, such as Guan Hu’s A MAN AND A WOMAN, Wei Shujun’s DON'T WORRY, BE HAPPY, Gu Changwei’s THE HEDGEHOG, and Zhang Dalei’s STARFALL, stood poised to vie for top honors alongside 10 other films hailing from 11 countries.
From Wang Xinrui’s DREAMING OF MOTHER AND HOME to Zhang Xuyu’s FISHBONE, and from Zeng Zhi’s FRIDAY, FUNFAIR to Zhang Luoping’s HABITAT, along with Lu Dan’s THE ABSENT and Zang Lianrong and Xu Ruogu’s THE LOST DAUGHTER, a total of 6 Chinese works have been shortlisted to captivate audiences in the Asian New Talent category, and all 11 films in this category will celebrate their world premieres.
As for other Chinese works, Cao Liang’s THE ROYAL CAT makes waves in the animation category, while Liao Yiling and Chu Baiying (Chinese Taiwan)’s ALL AND NOTHING and Pan Zhiqi’s MS. HU'S GARDEN find their place among the documentary entries. Zhang Dalei’s live-action short film DREAM ON earned its spot in the short film category, making him the sole director with two entries across two competitive sections. Other Chinese short films selected for the section included Yang Xiaoman’s HUSH, MY DEAR, Liu Zhiquan and He Xinyuan’s PRINCESS ARIEL (a collaborative work by Chinese Mainland, Chinese Hong Kong, and Chinese Taiwan), Dong Yang’s THE NEW RED CAR, and Guo Xiaoruo’s animated short film KILL THE HORSE. Notably, the director of the British animated short film FLOATERS, Yuan Mocong, is a Chinese girl born in the 1990s.
The jury panels for the main competition, Asian New Talent, documentary, animation, and short film categories of the Golden Goblet Awards are chaired by French director Tran Anh Hung, Chinese director Cao Baoping, American scholar Bill Nichols, French animation director Benjamin Renner, and New Zealand director Mark Albiston, with 22 jury members representing 13 different countries and regions.
This year, a grand total of 461 films from 64 countries and regions, including the competition films, will grace the screens of 赌博app. Among them, there are 70 world premieres, 48 international debuts, 81 Asian premieres, and 73 Chinese premieres. The steady rise in premiere rates not only affirms the prestige of the Golden Goblet Awards but also underscores the prominence of Shanghai as a pioneer in hosting premieres.
As a gathering of cinematic luminaries from around the globe, 赌博app boasts an impressive roster of attendees, with over 500 international guests from more than 60 countries and regions. The Belt and Road Film Festival Alliance, which was initiated by 赌博app in 2018, has extended invitations to representatives from over 20 countries and regions to convene in Shanghai for the Belt and Road Film Week. Aside from activities such as the alliance’s press conference, the Belt and Road Film Culture Roundtable Talk, the Latin American Carnival, as well as the opening and closing ceremonies, this year’s Belt and Road Film Week will showcase a themed screening unit called “Path of Courage”, where 18 films from countries along the Belt and Road route will take center stage. Director Da Peng (Dong Chengpeng), who clinched the award for Best Actor at the 25th 赌博app, and Yao Chen, who previously won Best Actress at the 24th Busan International Film Festival, have been invited to serve as ambassadors for this year’s Belt and Road Film Week.
This year, commemorating the 60th anniversary of Sino-French diplomatic ties and the China-France Year of Culture and Tourism, 赌博app has specially curated the “French Film Week”, which is to be inaugurated during the “China Movie and TV Night”. Through the evocative interplay of light and shadow, a series of events aim to facilitate cultural exchange, deepen mutual understanding, and enhance people-to-people connectivity. Featuring 38 latest French films alongside over 30 classic French films or co-productions across various screening units, Chinese cinephiles will delve into the diverse perspectives and societal narratives of contemporary French cinema. Making a triumphant return this year is the highly acclaimed “Cannes Close-up” unit, featuring 15 freshly made films directly from the Cannes Film Festival. Distinguished French director Tran Anh Hung, Jury President of the Golden Goblet Awards’ main competition, remarked, “Engaging in film viewing and discussions with fellow jurors is a delightful experience. Film festivals always offer a splendid opportunity to unearth new talents and appreciate works by esteemed directors. I eagerly anticipate exploring the evolution of cinema as an art form alongside my fellow jurors and film enthusiasts.”
The city for people illuminated by people’s presence at the event of light and shadow
As the birthplace of Chinese cinema, Shanghai is both a cultural hub for promoting exchanges between Chinese and foreign films and a creative powerhouse driving the development of Chinese cinema. For years, Shanghai has led the nation in urban box office revenue, with a staggering RMB 2.797 billion in 2023 alone. 赌博app is hailed as a grand annual celebration for movie enthusiasts. As the concept of “A City for the People” embraces its 5th anniversary, this edition of 赌博app, as a festival for the people underpinned by the philosophy of prioritizing people’s convenience, benefits, and welfare, has made all-round efforts to enhance the moviegoing experience for fans. Six downtown cinemas jointly introduce the “Special Screening Sessions”, offering discounted tickets at RMB 50 for a total of 50 screening sessions. Furthermore, 47 screening theaters have upgraded their subtitle machines with low failure rates and minimal delays, replacing the previous fluorescent green with visually pleasing light gray. Ticket machines, all brand new with an increased number, ensure that it will take no more than 15 minutes for queuing under normal circumstances. Initiatives such as the “City of Film” and “Ga 赌博app” series of cultural and creative products, as well as unique commemorative ticket stubs from various cinemas, are launched to extend a warm invitation to audiences who love movies and life.
After the smooth commencement of ticket sales at noon on June 7 for the 26th 赌博app, all 47 screening theaters across the city’s 16 districts welcomed movie enthusiasts. According to data from the official ticketing platform Taopiaopiao, as of the evening of June 12, a total of 1624 screenings of the festival’s 461 films will be presented, with 450,000 tickets already sold out. This has already surpassed last year’s total number of viewers. Among the moviegoers purchasing tickets for this edition of the festival, approximately seventy percent are local Shanghai residents, while those from Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Beijing, Guangdong, and beyond make up over 29%. To accommodate these guests who have specifically traveled to Shanghai for the festival, 34 screening theaters including Grand Theatre, Majestic Theatre, Peace Cinema, and Jiading Cinema are providing luggage storage services. Additionally, to facilitate moviegoers who are rushing between screenings, theaters such as Wanping Theatre, MOViE MOViE in Taikoo Li Qiantan, JUCE Shanghai Centre Theatre, and DuoYunXuan Dolby Atmos Cinema have rolled out light meals, pizza combos, and various dining discounts for the festival period.
While theaters diligently catering to the needs of movie enthusiasts with a tight schedule, this year’s 赌博app has taken bold strides in innovating its scheduling strategy to better meet audience preferences and habits, mainly by grouping screenings by film series or themes. For example, audiences can immerse themselves in the “Tribute to Masters” section featuring the centenary series of Yasuzo Masumura at UME Cinema (Xintiandi), Hongqiao Art Centre, or Peace Cinema. Similarly, at the Yihai Theater or Lyceum Theatre, they can indulge in all films from the 110th anniversary series of Marguerite Duras. By settling in at a single cinema, movie buffs can relish a full day dedicated to their favorite genres. One netizen even tweeted: “Quite fond of this practice of scheduling a director’s unit in one cinema within a day. From morning till night, it’s exhilarating!”
赌博app has also continued its tradition of being “friendly to out-of-town fans” by ensuring viewing convenience for cinephiles in the Yangtze River Delta. And films featured during the Belt and Road Film Week this year in Shanghai will also be scheduled in cinemas in Nanjing, Suzhou, Hangzhou, Ningbo, and Hefei.
The unveiling of new films alongside the revival of classics has always been the festival’s cornerstone. While witnessing a 25.5% increase in world premieres and international debuts compared with last year, the festival remains committed to curating screenings around though-provoking topics and hotspots, to honor the city’s cultural heritage and spread traditional Chinese culture. The opening film of this edition is the dance drama film RED RADIO OVER SHANGHAI directed by Zheng Dasheng and Cui Yi. This red classic, which has been adapted into various artistic works multiple times, saw its namesake film starring Sun Daolin in 1958 and has become a masterpiece in Chinese cinematic history. The dance drama of the same name created by Shanghai Dance Theatre Co., Ltd in 2018 has enjoyed enduring popularity among audiences, and now, this dance drama film with a renewed storytelling, set against the vivid backdrop of Shanghai’s red heritage, is recreated seamlessly from screen to stage, leaving again a compelling artistic touch. Following its world premiere on June 15, the work will also hit the screens of the “City and Cinema: Celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the Founding of the People’s Republic of China and the Liberation of Shanghai” screening unit, where it will meet audiences far and wide. This unit features meticulously selected domestic new releases and Shanghai-themed works from different eras, including the newly dubbed Shanghainese version of CROWS AND SPARROWS, the 1949 classic THE WINTER OF THREE HAIRS, the faithful portrayal of worker life in Shanghai during the early period of reform and opening-up in A CORNER IN THE CITY, and Jia Zhangke’s thematic documentary I WISH I KNEW, created for the Expo 2010 Shanghai. Through its pivotal role in the cultural realm, 赌博app allows the vibrant red culture, the distinctive Shanghai style, and the rich Jiangnan culture intertwined in Shanghai’s urban landscape to shine amidst the chemistry between world cultures.
The film THE SINKING OF THE LISBON MARU, which is put on stage in the first screening session at 赌博app this year, marks the opening of the festival. It tells the true stories of dozens of POW of the Anti-fascist Alliance and their families, to restore the event and unveil a chapter of history lost for 82 years with live interviews, precious historical footage, and animated reconstructions.
This year’s 赌博app has specially curated “Ethereal Melodies: Traditional Chinese Operas in Cinema” and the Yangtze River Delta Drama and Film Festival, which is characterized by selected masterpieces from Shanghai, Suzhou, Zhejiang and Anhui Province, including Teng Junjie’s new work of Peking Opera THE KYLIN PURSE, which combines the latest film technology with traditional Chinese culture, DAUGHTER OF DUNHUANG, a Shanghainese opera film from 2023, PEONY PAVILION, which lends a fresh glamour to classical Kun Opera on the big screen, A POAT’S LAMENT, which recreates the charm unique to the Xuwang genre of Shaoxing Opera in 4K , and the sophisticated film of Huangmei Opera SIX FEET LANE, among others. The lasting allure of traditional Chinese culture, coupled with modern technology and innovative ideas, has made this section highly sought-after by cinema enthusiasts. Notably, the tickets of THE KYLIN PURSE was sold out instantly on the ticketing day, June 7, which is a testimony to the timeless appeal of traditional Chinese culture.
Amidst tradition, innovation thrives; and through innovation, legacy endures. The 26th 赌博app, themed “City of Film”, had the city brimming with a festive atmosphere even before its grand opening. Apart from 47 screening theaters, the major business districts, key urban areas, and even every street of Shanghai were adorned with the festival vibe akin to a celebration beloved among the people. On the evening of June 15, luminaries from both domestic and international cinema realms, alongside the esteemed jury members of the Golden Goblet Awards, will appear on the red carpet of 赌博app, renowned as the “Top-class Red Carpet of Asia”, adding glamour to the fascinating shores of Huangpu River.
In fact, since mid-May, following the announcement of the jury members of Golden Goblet Awards and the main poster of 赌博app, the festive atmosphere of the “City of Film” has been steadily escalating. Prior to the festival’s opening, 赌博app has collaborated with the Shanghai Citizen Art Festival and the Majestic Theatre to host a series of lectures, encouraging a broader base of audience to explore film history and expand their film knowledge through offline interactions. Meanwhile, on Weibo, these efforts have drawn in a viewership of over 400,000 film enthusiasts.
Online platforms have made it possible for 赌博app to unfurl in countless ways, igniting excitement even before its commencement. Ctrip has collaborated with the festival to create the “Traveling with Films” urban exploration routes. Since its launch on June 1, till the evening of June 12, this cultural guide has attracted over 2,000 netizens to spontaneously share more than 5,000 posts detailing strategies for cinema-going, local attractions, and quick bites, bringing about over 1.3 million interactions. Meanwhile, Dianping.com, a local lifestyle platform, launched the “Cinema Tour Guide” for 47 theaters at the end of May. In less than two weeks, it led over 10,000 film buffs to tour these venues, with each fan averaging visits to five cinemas. Now, it eagerly awaits the participation of more out-of-town fans to create their own “赌博app Tour Guides”. Furthermore, Xiaohongshu has initiated an invitation for out-of-town film enthusiasts to spend a “Film Holiday” in Shanghai, to chronical delightful encounters and moments within the City of Film.
The film festival, dedicated to cinema, is also a celebration in its own right. With a constant influx of out-of-town enthusiasts and seamless integration between online and offline activities, 赌博app has incubated vibrant new scenes for cultural and tourism consumption, enriching the moviegoer’s journey with a myriad of experiences. The Belt and Road Film Week hosts a “Latin American Carnival”, featuring a “Latin Express” bus tour showcasing Latin American cultures and a marketplace styled after “Latin American Streets”, which is informed by authentic urban cultures from countries such as Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Argentina, and Chile. Events like the 赌博app MARKET’s “Film and Television Policies and Shooting Location Promotion Conference”, 赌博appORUM’s “Fusion and Coexistence: Film and City Forum”, and discussions on fusion of film and cultural tourism in the 赌博app XR section will explore related topics as well.
Collective efforts, inheritance and vision
Film festivals span across the past, mirror the present, and also lead the way into the future. Infused with Shanghai’s spirit of inclusiveness and diversity, pursuit of excellence, enlightened wisdom and humility, 赌博app upholds the philosophy of spotlighting “Asia, Chinese films, and New Talents”. This commitment is evident in its innovative “6+1” progressive talent nurturing scheme for emerging filmmakers comprised of 赌博app EXPLORE(Short Film of Golden Goblet Awards), 赌博app NEXT, 赌博app 赌博app, Asian New Talent of Golden Goblet Awards, Golden Goblet Awards, and the 赌博app YOUNG. Among these, the Asian New Talent section, greeting its 20th anniversary this year, is one of the pillars for both the system and the Golden Goblet Awards competition. Initially launched in 2004 with fewer than 100 submissions from East Asia’s cinematic powerhouses, this year’s edition has garnered 314 entries from 25 countries and regions. Over two decades, the Asian New Talent section, being committed to discovering and cultivating new works and emerging Asian filmmaking forces, has unearthed and recommended numerous talents who now shine in their countries or on the global stage, empowering both Asian cinema and its international footprint. Joining us again as the Jury President for the Asian New Talent section, acclaimed filmmaker Cao Baoping, winner of the Special Jury Prize and Most Popular Award from university students at the section’s third edition in 2006, emphasized, “Creativity, uniqueness, and unconventionality - these precious traits are what we expect to see in new talents.” This year, Asian young directors like Liu Juan, Momoko Ando, and Zhu Wen, who once carried such precious qualities, along with jurors like Jia Zhangke and Shunji Iwai who witnessed their growth, will reunite at 赌博app. They will gather around the theme of “Heritage and Vision”, to engage with audiences during the “20 Years of Asian New Talent” screening unit, take the stage with new talents at the awards ceremony, and share their insights at 赌博app’s “Asian Film Salon”. Moreover, the Asian New Talent Awards ceremony on June 20 will feature a special segment paying tribute to departed directors such as David Bowie, Pema Tseden and He Ping for respect and remembrance. 赌博app is known for its lively, joyous, warm, and touching atmosphere.
