On the afternoon of June 18, the German film ANOTHER GERMAN TANK STORY, nominated in the main competition category for the Golden Goblet Awards at this year’s Shanghai International Film Festival, held a crew meet-and-greet. Director Jannis Alexander Kiefer, producer Frithjof Stückemann, and performers Roland Bonjour, Meike Droste, and Alexander Schuster gathered to share insights into the film’s creative journey.
A shared exploration of cross-border crew members
Set in a German village, ANOTHER GERMAN TANK STORY begins with an American film crew intending to shoot a war-themed series at an abandoned sugar factory in Germany, leading to a series of events. The film presents a diverse spectrum: from existential reflections and profound philosophical musings to heartwarming tones and dark humor. This diversity stems largely from the rich personal experiences of the creative team.
Meike Droste, who has extensive experience in stage plays and has appeared in numerous comedy and crime-themed films and TV shows, applied these experiences to her role in this work. She noted significant differences between stage performances and film acting, emphasizing that on stage, performers engage directly with live audiences in real-time performances, whereas film freezes moments in time. Reflecting on her performance during the film’s world premiere in Shanghai over a year after filming, she remarked, “As I sat in the cinema watching this film, I thought about how different it would be if I were to portray my character now, because I’ve changed a lot from over a year ago.”
Producer Frithjof Stückemann, besides his role in this film, has previously served as a director and playwright. During the preparation of this work, he collaborated with director Jannis Alexander Kiefer on various aspects such as location investigation, production management, and thematic design.
To create freely with limited resources
ANOTHER GERMAN TANK STORY is not only Jannis Alexander Kiefer’s debut feature film as a director but also his master’s thesis project. With relatively small crew and limited production resources, the film faced several budgetary challenges during production. This necessitated compromises, as Jannis Alexander Kiefer explained, “In our creative process, we had many great ideas and designs that had to be abandoned due to budget constraints.” To address these challenges, he meticulously planned extensively beforehand. Despite these constraints, he immersed himself fully in the artistic freedom afforded by the project, stating, “In this project, I had a considerable degree of creative freedom, which I thoroughly enjoyed.”
Many members of the creative team behind this work have known each other for a long time. Coming together with the shared goal of creating a compelling film, they discussed and deliberated extensively, enriching details and optimizing budgets to satisfy all involved. Jannis Alexander Kiefer also hopes that this film will offer a fresh perspective, content, and imagination to the German film industry with new vitality.
At the end of the meet-and-greet, several other crew members of ANOTHER GERMAN TANK STORY joined from the guest seats to the stage, collectively bringing the film to the stage of the Shanghai International Film Festival and leaving behind memorable group photos.
