On the morning of June 21, the Documentary unit of Golden Goblet Awards held a press conference, featuring five nominated works: ALL AND NOTHING, GERI’S WISH, REQUIEM FOR A TRIBE, THE LANDSCAPE AND THE FURY, and MS. HU’S GARDEN. Among them, three were world premieres and two were international premieres.
From Girlhood to Artist,
Documenting Individual Choices in a Great Era
The documentary ALL AND NOTHING, directed by Liao I-ling and Chu Po-Ying, revolves around the artist Li Yuan-Chia’s journey. Chu Po-Ying described how Li Yuan-Chia’s establishment of an art museum in the wilderness of northern England inspired profound local impact and reflection.
Liao I-ling recalled being profoundly struck during her first visit to the art museum: “The moment the door opened, you could imagine being inside a dilapidated house with a spinning disk, much like a lonely planet rotating there. The space was filled with an atmosphere of loneliness and sadness. I was eager to uncover what had happened in that place.” This motivated them to use film to document the story and seek answers.
As co-directors, Liao I-ling and Chu Po-Ying divided their roles effectively for this work. Liao focused on gathering and interpreting documents to uncover pivotal figures, while Chu handled the cinematography and technical aspects. They emphasized that despite the importance of communication and collaboration, their ultimate priority was allowing the film itself to speak.
Producer Kaarle Aho introduced the film GERI’S WISH, which tells the story of an 18-year-old Bulgarian girl who grew up in an orphanage. “This year, she is preparing to enter university, which also means leaving the orphanage behind. She is determined to search for the truth of her own life.” Aho also noted that although director Tonislav Hristov did not appear at the meet-and-greet, his previous film THE GOOD POSTMAN was nominated in the documentary category of Golden Goblet Awards at the 20th Shanghai International Film Festival.
MS. HU’S GARDEN, a documentary that took over a decade to complete, explores themes of love and family. Producer Ruby Chen described it as centered around MS. HU’S GARDEN lodge, capturing the lives of those around her. Director Pan Zhiqi added that amidst the story lies the backdrop of urbanization and modern consumerism, aiming to present narratives of both an era and ordinary people through this context. Another crew member Xu Xiaoming, who initially participated in post-production as a friend during Pan Zhiqi’s 24th Street, provided hands-on involvement throughout the production of MS. HU’S GARDEN.
From Tribe to Region:
Documenting the Changes of Era and History
Marjan Khosravi’s REQUIEM FOR A TRIBE documents the traditions of Iran’s Bahktiari tribe located in the southwestern part of Iran. “Due to technological advancements and ongoing changes, the nomadic lifestyle of this region is continuously evolving, with fewer people opting for nomadic life,” she explained. Through this documentary, she aims to preserve their traditions.
In the film, Marjan Khosravi focuses her lens on the traditional women of the nomadic tribe, saying, “Since my childhood, my mother used to tell me about many dreams that were never fulfilled.” Her mother aspired to become a teacher but couldn’t fulfill her dream. Therefore, REQUIEM FOR A TRIBE is a tribute to many women like her.
The English title of THE LANDSCAPE AND THE FURY conveys the turbulent emotions behind the scenery and the fury, explained director Nicole Vögele, whose film captures a forested area. “This location lies in the northwest region of Bosnia, bordering Croatia. The terrain is highly complex, intertwined with stories of national division and historical changes.”
The film’s editing diverges from conventional documentary narration, as editor Hannes Bruun elaborated in response to questions from journalists: “We aimed to find a visual language that best suits the story, diving deep to understand how to convey these narratives and evoke the emotions within these landscapes.” After all, their goal is to resonate with viewers through the power of scenery.
